The Westies are from the county of Argyll, Scotland. During the Nineteenth Century Terriers in the area (the Cairn Terrier) were used primarily for hunting fox, most were dark, but at times appeared  with a  clear coat and were prized because they were clearly differentiated in hunting. These dogs were called white West Highland White Terrier. They were recognized as an independent race in 1904 and in the 20th century they became companyon dogs.

West Highland terriers are usually between 15 and 22lbs for the male ones and 12 to 14lbs in female westies with a height of about 28cm.

Unlike other Terriers, they are very friendly with strangers and usually get along with other dogs avoiding comfrontations. But let them be waked up at 3 o´clock in the morning, I can assure you they will bark like hell!

They are small  dogs with a robust structure, compact and muscular, with a penetrating gaze and small erect ears . They are very lively, active, courageous and very sure of themselves, qualities that make them a great watchdog.
